The Winter Ales

I'm enjoying a nice porter from Shipyard: Longfellow Winter Ale. There's a nice quote from the man, who may be Portland's most famous native son, on the label.

Often I think of the beautiful town That is seated by the sea.

We did have a wonderful, sunny, warm (40 degrees F) winter day today, and Portland did look lovely. We have a winter storm coming tomorrow. I better drink a little more Longfellow and rest up for the storm.

They call this a porter? You call it a porter?
I generally like porters, and generally dislike winter ales. So what's the scoop on that?

Maybe that's why I liked it--it was an atypical porter. I better try it again.

What's the quintessential local porter?

I'm as enamored of Geary's products as you are of Allagash. It may not be the quintessence of local porter, but I like their London Porter.
I keep getting lured in by Sebago's Porter, then remembering with the first sip that it has an aftertaste I don't care for (do they brew it with Moxie or what?)
